the music on this cd is simply wonderful, but under no circumstances should you buy it. why? i'll explain. this cd compiles 3 early (recorded in and ) sessions by the great west coast altoist art pepper, but very casually omits 1 song from each of the first 2 sessions and then omits 2 from the last session here. the idea behind this original release seems to have been to not include any ballads in /5(8).

CD. A classic 50s album on Savoy – a set that's almost as memorable for its cartoony cover as it is for the great Art Pepper material on the record! Pepper's tone here is wonderful – that sharper-edged, more soulful approach that you often get in his smaller label 50s work – a nice contrast to some of the smoother sides of Art, and the part of his sound we really love.

Recorded in Los Angeles between , and cobbled together for album release. Three different bands are used, all of them serviceable but not particularly inspired. The early Pepper is in good form, however, and while it's no masterpiece it's quite listenable.
