The strength of Into the Grave is its brute-force violence; you know from the opening whirlwind of drum fills and that tremolo riff that launches "Deformed" forth - one so hideous that it can't help but evoke the mood of the song right off the bat - that this isn't going to be a record with any sort of prettiness to it.

So even if the musical edifices supported by death metal cornerstones such as "Deformed," "Into the Grave," and "Day of Mourning" are perhaps not as tall or ostentatious to the ear as those built by others, without them the entire musical megalopolis that followed would surely crumble -- hence Into the Grave's enduring if oftentimes underrated.

Excellent album, one of the best on the Swedish old school death metal. The sound is too heavy, it can melt walls into mud, brutal vocals, can play it in loops. The album might sound a bit repetitive in the first listens; it needs to grow on you. Top tracks: ‘Hating Life’, ‘In Love’, ‘Into the Grave’, ‘Inhuman’ and ‘Deformed’/5(26).
